Manifold
Manifold
Approx. 35"x40". Recycled and scrap cotton, silk, polyester and linen filled with soil, leaves, mushrooms, wood, paper, stone, metal, and seeds.
Quilt of eleven dozen pockets that can be worn, carried, and laid down. The pockets contain artifacts or tokens of a series of days, and are filled with items I gathered from three square acres where I live. The contents of each pocket leaves a trace, a weight, a scent, or a stain.
Some are accessible and can be opened, and some are sewn inside and can only be seen through the veil of the enclosing fabric. I was influenced by traditional quilt structures (baby quilt, rag quilt, and crazy quilt), while also complicating their significance - a square may appear soft and comforting, only to contain a stone, or a bee.
This project used only recycled, donated and reclaimed fabric and lining.
